Fischer Chess Club Crowned Champions of the Sri Lanka National Team (Super League) Chess Championship 2024
The Sri Lanka National Team (Super League) Chess Championship 2024, a premier chess event organised by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, showcased intense competition from October 31 to November 4, 2024, at the Sanhinda Leisure Centre in Nugegoda. This championship brought together Sri Lanka’s top 10 chess teams, who battled in a 9-round round-robin format. The event’s time control was 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, allowing for deeply strategic and highly competitive play.
The Fischer Chess Club demonstrated unmatched dominance, capturing the championship title with a flawless 18/18 match points. Undefeated throughout the tournament, Fischer Chess Club maintained a commanding presence from the first round, solidifying their position as the top team in Sri Lanka.
Sokians Chess Club earned the first runner-up position with 13/18 match points. They tied with Anandians Chess Club at 13 match points, but a superior score in game points—the first tie-break criterion—gave Sokians the edge, leaving Anandians Chess Club to secure the second runner-up position.
The awards ceremony, attended by Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, President of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, celebrated the exceptional skills and teamwork displayed by all participants. The championship recognized individual excellence with board prizes awarded to standout players across various boards.
