On July 20, 2024, Sri Lanka made a remarkable contribution to the FIDE attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the highest number of chess games played within 24 hours. This effort was part of a global initiative to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
A total of 109 chess federations participated in this record-breaking attempt, reporting their results from around the world. Sri Lanka led the way with 9,848 games, followed closely by India with 9,397 games, and Kazakhstan with 8,759 games. In addition to having the highest number of games, Sri Lanka and India hosted the most registered tournaments for the competition, each organising 78 tournaments, followed by China with 45.
FIDE was founded on July 20, 1924, in Paris, France, during the first unofficial Chess Olympiad. Fifteen delegates from various countries signed the Proclamation Act, establishing FIDE under the motto “Gens una Sumus” (“We are one people”). This motto symbolises FIDE’s commitment to uniting the global chess community. As one of the first international sports federations, FIDE has played a pivotal role in promoting and organizing chess worldwide.
To celebrate its centenary, FIDE organized various events, tournaments, and functions. On July 20, FIDE aimed to organize over one million games worldwide with the help of its affiliated federations, setting a Guinness record for the most games played within 24 hours.
The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka supported this initiative by organizing physical Blitz Championships in six divisions: Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Gampaha, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, and Batticaloa. Additionally, the federation hosted an online blitz chess championship on its official chess.com club, with 268 players competing in the event.
After the official announcement from the Guinness Record Authority, it was confirmed that FIDE had surpassed the original goal of one million games, setting a new record with 7,284,970 games played within 24 hours. This staggering number represents a 728% increase over the initial target. FIDE aims to surpass this record annually, continuing to promote and grow the game of chess globally.
Sri Lanka’s significant contribution to this initiative is a testament to the popularity of chess in the country and its commitment to the global chess community. This achievement highlights the dedication of Sri Lankan players and organizers, showcasing their passion for the game on an international stage.
