Chenitha Mithvidu Ovitigala and H Sandithi Kusalya Alwis Triumph at the 10th National Amateur International Rated Chess Championships 2024
The 10th National Amateur International Rated Open and Women’s Chess Championships 2024 concluded successfully from October 16 to 20 at the Sanhinda Leisure Centre in Nugegoda, Sri Lanka. Organised by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, the event featured intense competition across the open and women’s categories, offering a prize fund of Rs 500,000 along with certificates, medals, and trophies to top performers. The championships followed a 9-round Swiss format with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from the first move.
Chenitha Mithvidu Ovitigala Wins the Open Championship
In the Open Championship, 207 players competed for the title. Chenitha Mithvidu Ovitigala emerged victorious, scoring 7.5 points out of 9 rounds. Chenitha secured the title through superior tie-breaks, as three players finished with identical scores of 7.5 points. Sethun Neththaru Manuwaruna claimed the first runner-up position, while Mohamed Nabil Nazar took third place.
H Sandithi Kusalya Alwis Dominates the Women’s Championship
The Women’s Championship saw 98 participants, with H Sandithi Kusalya Alwis delivering an unbeaten performance to claim the title with 8 out of 9 points. J M Theruni V Jayasundara finished as the first runner-up with 7.5 points. The battle for the second runner-up position was close, with three players tied at 7 points. WCM G P Y Wijesuriya ultimately secured third place through a superior tie-break.
The awards ceremony, attended by members of the executive committee of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, celebrated the skill, dedication, and sportsmanship of all participants. The 10th National Amateur International Rated Chess Championships continue to be a highlight in Sri Lanka’s chess calendar, showcasing emerging talent and fostering competitive excellence in the sport.
